Why you need links
Links are votes. Every link pointing to your site counts as a vote for your site. The more votes you have, the more search engines will view it as a quality site worth listing highly. Your sites value isn't just based on the number of links pointing to it, it's also based on the quality of those links. One link from a high quality website could be worth more than 1000 links from low quality spammy sites.
Do it yourself
Before the link building process begins, you need to be sure your site contains relative, informative content. If you have good content, you'll find people other site owners will be more willing to link to you, not only with reciprocal linking, but also one-way linking which is more valuable.
When you're ready to start exchanging links with other sites, research carefully. Not all links pass on value, some links will do your site more harm than good. If you're unsure, send me an email and I'll tell you whether the link is worth exchanging.
- check links aren't embedded in javascript
- check the page doesn't have a noindex, nofollow meta tag
- check the page is listed in the search engines
- check the site doesn't have a robots.txt exclusion
- check links on the page aren't cloaked by using Googles cache facility
- check the page doesn't have hundreds of other links
